Space Exploration Technologies Corp. closed at $145.23 on October 28th, 2026, down $3.35 or 2.25%, according to StockAnalysis.com. That was the same day Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Elon Musk by name at a technology exhibition in Moscow.
Putin made the comments on the sidelines of a Russia-Africa summit, where Russia presented its own satellite internet constellation. AFP, carried by Yahoo News and The Standard of Hong Kong, rendered the line as "Elon Musk is a genius, truly a genius."
What happened
Russia's Digital Development and Communications Minister Maksut Shadayev presented the Rassvet satellite constellation to Putin and visiting African leaders, and said Russia had a little more than 30 satellites in orbit, according to Reuters as reported by Benzinga and Tesla North. Putin, per AFP, contrasted that with Starlink: he asked how many units Musk has in orbit, answered "More than 5,000," and said Russia is taking its first steps.
The Moscow Times reported Putin also said Moscow remains in close contact with its American partners, including Musk, on the grounds that operators in orbit need to avoid interfering with one another and keep a certain discipline and order. Outlook India reported Russia plans to begin Rassvet service in 2027, a target not confirmed by Reuters, AFP or CNBC in the reporting reviewed.
The wording of the quote varies by outlet and translation. The Hill, citing Russian state news agency TASS, reported it as "Elon Musk is a genius, he's just a real genius." The Moscow Times and Benzinga used "real genius."
Why it moved
No source reviewed established that Putin's remarks caused the share decline. Investor's Business Daily published a story headlined "SpaceX Retreats As Russia's Putin Says This About Elon Musk," posted to the @IBDinvestors account on X at 8:30 p.m. on October 28th, 2026, and the IBD summary pairs the praise with a report that an advertising firm was accused of spying via Starlink. The headline juxtaposes the two events rather than linking them.
Yahoo Finance separately ran a piece headlined that SpaceX stock was sliding back toward $140 as smaller space names outperformed. Google Finance showed the stock at $144.38, down 2.83%, intraday at 2:45 p.m. ET on the same day.
There is also a dating discrepancy worth naming. StockAnalysis.com and Google Finance tie the 2.25% fall to the October 28th, 2026 session, while a Yahoo Finance page states SPCX was down 2.25% in regular-session trading on October 29th, 2026. CNBC and Euronews date their write-ups of Putin's Wednesday remarks to October 29th. More on the company is at /companies/SPCX.
What the record shows
Our own record has nothing to add here. This is a news event, not a filing, and there is no insider transaction attached to it.
What the public record does establish is the share structure. SpaceX has traded on the Nasdaq under SPCX since its initial public offering on June 12th, 2026, which Wikipedia records as priced at $135 a share with a first-day close of $161. Musk retains roughly 82% of voting power.
What to watch
The praise landed days after a dispute over Ukraine's access to Starshield, SpaceX's military-grade network. CNBC and Snopes report that on October 14th, 2026 Ukrainian officials said SpaceX imposed speed limits under which any drone travelling above 100 mph lost its connection, disrupting missions.
President Donald Trump said Musk had lifted the restrictions, a claim Ukrainian soldiers disputed on Friday, October 23rd, 2026, according to The Washington Post. CNBC reported on October 24th that after service was restored Musk said Ukraine had violated its Starlink agreement. SpaceX did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment on that dispute, and no SpaceX or Musk response to the "genius" remark appeared in the reporting reviewed.
The satellite-count comparison itself depends on the source. Putin cited more than 5,000 Starlink units in orbit, while The Hill described Russia's 30-plus satellites as a fraction of the nearly 10,000 satellites Starlink operates. The Moscow Times noted Putin has previously compared Musk to Soviet rocket engineer Sergei Korolev, and that Kremlin special envoy Kirill Dmitriev has proposed joint SpaceX-Roscosmos work on Mars exploration.
