MercadoLibre, Inc. (MELI) closed down nearly 8% on Monday, October 26th, 2026, according to Stocktwits and TradingView, part of a broad slide in Brazil-exposed assets after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won an unprecedented fourth term. In a Substack comment the same day, Michael Burry wrote that the decline was a big hit but that he saw it as opportunity because he did not see fundamental impact.
Hours earlier, Burry had dismissed the biggest IPO filing of the moment. Responding to readers about Anthropic's prospectus, he wrote that there was a lot in it but nothing that changed his view, adding that there was far more going on than the S-1 addressed, per Yahoo Finance and Stocktwits.
What happened
Stocktwits, citing asianetnews syndication, reported that Anthropic, the company behind Claude, filed for a Nasdaq listing under the ticker ANT on Monday, October 26th, 2026, without setting an offering price or a share count. Yahoo Finance reported the S-1 disclosed roughly $500 billion in infrastructure commitments alongside soaring revenue and large losses.
Burry's reply came to a reader arguing that large language models had not hit a wall and were still improving exponentially. His answer, per Yahoo Finance, was that his view in a nutshell is that the technology is improving and that this has nothing to do with any short thesis. He listed the drivers of his bearish position as the financing, the insurer shell leverage in it, the inability to plug in the latest chips, DRAM capacity repurposed for HBM that he said will return with a vengeance, and compression and small language model proliferation on open weight models. On Anthropic specifically, he said a lot changed in the developer landscape at the end of the second quarter and during the third, and that it is not in the prospectus.
Why it moved
CNBC reported that Lula overturned a first-round loss to Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, that Bolsonaro refused to concede and said he would seek annulment, and that the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ) fell 25% in premarket trading on Monday. Asianet Newsable, citing Brazil's Superior Electoral Court, put the result at 51.8% to 48.2%.
The size of the damage differs by outlet. The Asia Business Daily reported the Bovespa closed October 26th, 2026 at 176,608.23, down 13.88%, its steepest fall since the early days of COVID-19. Quartz reported the index fell nearly 17% with the real down more than 10% against the dollar. MarketScreener reported Bovespa futures fell nearly 15% in early Monday trading. Alongside MercadoLibre, Nu Holdings (NU) closed down nearly 17%, per Stocktwits and TradingView, and Burry's same comment also flagged NU, PBR and EWZ.
Coverage of MercadoLibre this week has circulated in a form that needs correcting. It was ARK Investment Management, not Burry's Scion Asset Management, that bought on Monday: Stocktwits reported ARK purchased 76,636 NU shares worth about $964,800 through ARKF, plus 723 MELI shares worth $1.2 million through ARKF and 1,493 MELI shares worth $2.5 million through ARKW.
What the record shows
Burry's MercadoLibre remark was a Substack comment, not a disclosed trade. No Scion Asset Management filing or 13F covering October 2026 activity has been made public, and no outlet reviewed reported that he bought MELI shares during the selloff.
He was, however, already long. GuruFocus reported that Burry disclosed on his Substack on May 11th, 2026 that he had acquired a full position in MercadoLibre the prior week in the $1,600 share-price range, after a 12.7% earnings-related drop.
What to watch
On Anthropic, reported valuation expectations vary. Yahoo Finance framed the question around a $2 trillion valuation, while KuCoin's news desk cited a $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion range and a listing targeted for the week of November 16th. InsiderBuying.com has not independently verified a valuation range from the filing itself. SmartAsset reported Anthropic first submitted a draft S-1 to the SEC on June 1st, 2026, after announcing a $65 billion Series H round at a $965 billion post-money valuation.
On Brazil, Bolsonaro's stated plan to seek annulment leaves the political outcome unsettled, per CNBC. Whether Burry acted on the view he posted will not be visible until a filing says so.
